Virgilio Valente

Virgilio Valente is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University. He received the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from University College London (UCL), U.K., in 2011. Between 2011 and 2020 he held postdoctoral and Faculty positions at UCL, UK, and Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. In 2015, he also joined Tetrivis LTD, UK, as an IC design engineer. In 2017, Virgilio was a Visiting Scholar in the Nano Lab at Tufts University, Medford, USA.

Dr. Valente leads a research team focused on the development of miniaturized wireless microsensors for lab-on-chip, wearable and implantable medical devices with medical applications including wireless health monitoring, diagnostics and closed-loop therapy. His primary focus is the integration of multi-modality sensor structures, sensor readout and wireless units in mm-scale devices. Dr. Valente’s research activities include:

  • The design of ultra-low-power microelectronic sensor interfaces
  • The Integration of energy harvesting and wireless powering functionality for energy-autonomous smart sensors
  • Monolithic integration of microelectromechanical sensors and actuators with microelectronic circuits and wireless units
  • Wireless data and power links for multi-modal sensor networks
  • Assistant Professor
